Dasavatharam' exclusive

june 6 th

As the release date of the epic film 'Dasavatharam' which falls on June 06th is getting closer, we get a feeling that a huge wave is approaching with all its might to assault our minds with the sheer strength of its entertaining value.

No other film in recent times has been designed with such grandeur to give viewers a unique experience. An experience beyond comparison that can be cherished for a lifetime.

It sure takes guts just to think of recreating the onslaught of the deadly Tsunami. The tremendous force of the gushing water that rose as high as a double storey building only to swallow whatever comes in its path is not only a task which requires months of planning, incredible team work, experienced hardcore professionalism but to top it all a willingness to take a huge risk especially because of the danger involved with letting out enormous quantities of stored up water exclusively for the purpose of filming.

But then, do the filmmakers have any other option to recreate the real power of the Tsunami? Truly a big ask with the magnitude of the tsunami on one hand and the extra perfectionist attitude of the hero Kamal Hassan on the other.

The set for shooting the natural disaster was put up on five acres of land in the outskirts of Chennai city.

This space was used for canning the scenes in which the water will be shown exploding with force and on its way to invade the city of Chennai. There are also shots that show the wrath of nature tossing up mighty trees and heavy cars causing them to float aimlessly like paper boats in a pond.

The same crew members of the evergreen Hollywood blockbuster 'Titanic' were employed to maximize the perfection of the Tsunami scene that would feature in 'Dasavatharam' for 7 minutes. This scene is surely one of the gems of 'Dasavatharam'.

We have all seen various footage of the catastrophe caused by the giant waves on different television channels and from numerous websites.

A fantastic raw real life footage of the devastation filmed with the help of a handicam in Indonesia and which has escaped the eyes of any communication media till now in the world has been sourced by the creative team of 'Dasavatharam' and is to be incorporated with the scenes shot in the set. The artificially created scenes along with the raw footage when amalgamated with the world class computer graphics imagery executed in Bangkok will make the 7 minute tsunami scene the talk of the town paving the way for immortality.

Pardhu
Released on May 23, 2008

Pardhu, is also a commercial entertainer with plenty of dance, action, fights, comedy and sentiments. Lawrence displays a lot of energy with Sneha and Namitha giving sparkle and glamour to an entertainer that is definitely worth checking out.

The story line is wafer-thin with an oft-repeated clich where a careless youth, ridiculed by his family for being irresponsible, turns over a new leaf and takes care of the entire family. Director Rasu Madhuravan has created the right balance between the serious display of feeling in the mother-son bond, comedy and romance.

The film opens with Pardhu (Lawrence) doing menial jobs in Dubai, saving every penny he earns and sending it to his family in Usilampatti. The flashback reveals that he was a carefree youth, often drawing his father's (Nazar) ire who thought his older son (Sreeman) was the responsible son who would take care of his parents. However, Pardhu was his mother's (Saranya) pet.

The flashback continues, showing Sneha, a village cop's daughter, and Pardhu falling in love. In the course of events, Pardhu's sister's wedding is arranged. Just before the marriage ceremonies start, the money kept aside for the wedding is stolen. After initially blaming Pardhu, the shocked parents learn the truth; Sriman, the elder son, has run away with his lover after stealing the money kept aside for the wedding.

Pardhu consoles his heart-broken father, borrows money from a private money-lender and gets his sister married. At this juncture, Sneha walks out of the house and marries Pardhu.

Now Pardhu takes his family's financial burden on his shoulders and goes to the Middle East to earn money and send it home. Then, when his family's finances have stabilized, tragedy strikes again. He returns to find his mother has died and that it was no natural death. Does he discover the truth behind his mother's death? Is he able to avenge his mother's death? Watch this gripping entertainer to find out.

Madhuravan has taken an old idea and given it a very 21st century treatment with a gripping taut screenplay. Lawrence carries the entire movie on his shoulders, dancing, romancing and emoting as only he knows how.

Ever since the film's shooting started, rumours of Sneha shedding her girl-next-door image and going in for a glamorous make-over were floating around. Now that the movie has released, it is seen that Sneha has come out of the pupa of her homely image to display a glamorous image. Will Sneha's new glam doll image go down well with her fans and audiences in general? Only time can tell.

Namitha is her usual self in Pardhu, dancing around in skimpy costumes for a couple of songs. Nazar and Saranya, as the shell-shocked archetypal middle-class parents, have given stellar performances. Ganja Karuppu, Sriman and Illavarasu have just done their jobs.

Srikanth Deva's compositions have many mass elements. The hit song 'Yenno Raatrulostaayi Gaani' was picturised on Lawrence and Sneha in a very romantic and rustic manner. Namitha too has a song with the hero, her dancing being the highlight of the song. There are seven lilting and rhythmic songs to cater to all tastes.

Pardhu is a thorough mass-entertainer, catering to all tastes and is an enjoyable film.

Box Office Verdict: Flop (Source: Hi Bangalore)

So you thought radio stations air programs that you could listen whenever you want to and change the channel if the RJ talks without knowing when to stop. Life isn’t that simple, brother. You walk into the theatre to watch Mussanje Maatu and sit with expectations aplenty in your clueless mind. But what unfolds on your miserable soul is a three hour long radio program that drills endlessly about the facts of life. You can’t change the channel; you can’t even walk out because you sheepishly wish there might be something good on offer in the coming reels. And all you get is more preachy dialogues about life.

Mussanje Maatu is a title of a radio program where the RJ consoles people who are in distress (Sorry, the audience are not allowed to call.) Oh yes, this is a radio program and the RJ is supposed to speak, and there will be plenty of speech. But are we watching a movie or ‘watching’ a radio program? Taking Kannada industry’s newfound fascination with radio channels to new heights (It was there in Milana, and Accident too,) the entire story and film Mussanje Maatu revolves around a radio program. There is nothing wrong in that, but the film gets absolutely boring after a while and nobody is interested in whatever happens in the film.

MussanjeMaathu The biggest bane of the film is its dialogues. Everybody mouths philosophical dialogues at the slightest of provocation and they keep belting them out till you plead them to stop. In an age when filmmakers stress on short, crisp dialogues and sometimes absolute silence to get their points across, this film has long, melodramatic dialogues that nobody wants to listen to. Everybody in the film is hurt, and they won’t rest till you join the pack. The mode of torture is endless, monotonous, melodramatic dialogues that keep haunting you even after you leave the theatres; alas, not in the way the director intended.

But hold on, there are few good points to talk about, and believe me, I won’t take half as time as the RJ takes in his radio programs. The film belongs to Sudeep and Sudeep only. His mannerisms, body language and the way he emotes and the way he carries himself in this entire film is worth appreciating. He carries a weak story marred by outdated dialogues on his shoulders in a way that is highly commendable. Good that he is working with some better filmmakers like Ram Gopal Verma.

Ramya does total justice to her role and looks hot in the song Kaddalu Manasanna. She never goes overboard even with such a highly melodramatic script. There is a quiet confidence about her which shows all through the film. Other supporting cast like Ramesh Bhat does just fine in their roles. The film has roped in popular humorists like Pranesh to play comic roles. We all love Pranesh for his authentic north Karnataka dialogues and humor on stage. But film is not a medium where he will be respected if he carries on such roles.

The surprise package of the film is Anu Prabhakar who looks no less beautiful than Ramya and acts well too. Wish our Kannada directors could offer meatier roles for her in the future. Also, the role of the little boy who stays next to Anu Prabhakar’s house, the concept of the character and the way it ends is conveniently lifted from recent Amitabh Bachchan starrer Chini Kum. Needless to say, the original was better.

Veteran cinematographer Sundarnath Suvarna does a neat job in the film. Whenever he gets a chance to get the hell out of Mussanje Maatu studios and capture some beautiful locales, he does a totally commendable job. Even Mahesh’s direction is reasonably good, but he should get the right script and also understand that sometimes, silence is much better than words.

So, are you going to watch the film? We advise you to stay at home and listen to the radio instead. You can at least change the channel if the RJ and company get too melodramatic.

Movie Name:Accident
Release Date: 4th April 2008 Producer: Ragunath.G Director: Ramesh Aravind Cast: Ramesh, Rekha, Mohan, Tilak,
Balaji, Pooja Gandhi. Music Director: Rickey Tej Cinematographer: G.S.Bhaskar Story/Dialogues: Rajendra Karanth Editor: P.R.Soundar Raj Art Director:
Ramesh Desai

Suspense thrillers are rare in Kannada. In fact, after Sunil Kumar Desai disappeared from the scene after a series of flops, nobody has tried that genre. Ramesh Arvind does try his hand at this genre, and the results are mixed.

In Kannada, Ramesh Arvind’s Accident is literally incomparable as no one in the recent times has tried this genre! But comparisons can be made with the films of the other languages. It seems Ramesh is heavily influenced by the Hindi director duo Abbas Mustan’s run of the mill suspense thrillers. Like Abbas Mustan’s films, Ramesh’s Accident runs on multiple tracks at the same time and ends up loosing one of the most important element of the suspense thrillers; a gripping narrative.

It’s not as if the film is bad or boring. It’s a decent entertainer, and unfortunately, it remains just that. Trying his hands in a different genre for the first time, Ramesh succeeds in telling a story that keeps you interested till the end by its very nature. But songs prove to be a bane for the film. Just when you think the film is moving in the right direction, your concentration is disturbed by a song, and all of them are pretty ordinary.

For a suspense thriller, cinematography and background music are the two key points which can make or break the film. Although the cinematography is OK, cinematographer G.S Bhaskar does not try anything unique. Remember those dim lit rooms and spooky camera angles Ram Gopal Verma created in films like Bhoot? Well, this genre is bit different, but some more imaginative camera work could have definitely done the trick. Music by first timer Rickey Tej is also strictly OK. Sound design, which is another important factor of such films, fails to register.

Accident has so many characters in the film which could have been easily cut out from the main narrative. Dattanna’s character is one such example. Although this fine actor does a commendable job as the mentally disturbed father in law, his character is another disturbance in the flow of the film. So, is the pathetic pirated CD king, who looks like a joker out of a circus (I don’t think it was intentional). But the health minister’s character has been enacted well, and the actor who played the role will definitely be seen in lot of movies in the coming years.

As mentioned before, Accident is a decent entertainer. But from a man who made Ram Shama Bhama, which was way better than its Hindi counterpart Biwi No. 1, much more was expected.

-----------------------------------------
A slick fast paced movie full of John Gresham kind of dry sarcastic humor throughout the movie. The biggest strengths of this movie are the dialogues, the screenplay and of course Ganesh. Ganesh's performance is more matured, brilliant and full of life. Almost every line of Ganesh in this movie has dry sarcastic humor in them. Even the tragic scenes have been shot with sarcastic humor without losing the "tragedy" effect. The dialogues have been so powerful that kannada had never sounded so beautiful before. Since ages, Kannda movies suffered from the textbook dramatic kannada which used to kill the realistic value of the movie. Directors like Prem(Jogi) and Upendra(Om, A) tried to put an end to this unrealistic dramatic kannada and succeeded to a certain extent. In Gaalipata, Yograj Bhat excels in this front. The kannada slang's have been used extensively in this movie. Good for the kannada language and as well as for kannada movie industry. in fact, Gaalipata is the best thing that could have happened to the kannada industry.

The screen play and dialogues are written brilliantly, completely out of the blue even though there is no story in the movie!! Full credit to Yograj Bhat. I came across one of Yograj Bhat's interviews in The Hindu in which he had mentioned that Dil Chahta Hain was one of his most favourite films. Sure, he must have inspired from this movie to come up with 3 friends group in Gaalipata.
